Branch Information

Stickledown Range, Bisley

LRR
Established in 1990, the Long Range Rifles Branch of the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain (MLAGB) held its first competitions at Bisley that year; a 600 yard match for Whitworth rifles and a 1,000 yard Championship for any muzzle loading rifle. Since then a comprehensive programme has been established for percussion muzzle loading military, military match and full match rifles, usually commencing at 600 yards.

The Branch arranges many of its events to tie in with the MLAGB series of mid and long range National Rifle Championship Matches at Bisley. This enables full weekends of shooting to be arranged incorporating a social meeting and occasional informal lectures. Unlike regional Branches of the MLAGB, Long Range Rifles draws its membership from throughout the UK, and also includes members in Jersey, France and the Netherlands. The Branch Annual General Meeting is usually held in August and the Annual Dinner and Prize Giving in October.

Branch competitions are held at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley Camp, Surrey. Members also take part in other local and regional events and MLAGB competitions at the Association’s range complex at Wedgnock, Warwick.

Long Range Rifles Branch members have competed with success in international teams and were instrumental in running the Muzzle Loaders Associations International Confederation (MLAIC) Long Range World Championships when hosted by the MLAGB at Bisley in 1999, 2000, 2005, 2011 and 2019.

Membership enquiries are welcomed, but please note that all members of the Long Range Rifles Branch must be full or family members of the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain.

For those new to the discipline of long range muzzle loading (often abbreviated to LRML), then perusal of the Reference pages is recommended. Here will be found historical background and introductory advice for shooting today. The sport has a rich heritage and the hey-day of the muzzle loading era for rifle marksmen in Great Britain was the first two decades of the National Rifle Association's (NRA) existence; broadly 1860-1880. Today, two national associations within the UK cater for the discipline of long range muzzle loading, namely the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain and the National Rifle Association. Members of the Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB have a shared interest in the sport and its history.
